Methods of Religious Education: Lesson Planning
An introduction to planning a religious education lesson by setting goals, identifying catechetical pillars and planning activities using a five part lesson plan.
The course will introduce the planning process and review each part of the lesson plan and provide students opportunity to share tips and techniques for each part of the plan.
At the conclusion of the course, each student will create their own example of a complete lesson plan.
About Methods of Religious Education (M.O.R.E.) courses:
Methods of Religious Education (M.O.R.E.) courses are a series of courses for those Catechists wanting to learn more. This could be those working on their certification through Franciscan at Home looking for additional courses to help them succeed in sharing the faith with their students. It could include those already certified who are looking for fresh ideas or continuing education opportunities.
These courses utilize online discussion boards as a tool for Catechists to learn from each other. There is a vast wealth of experiential learning out there in the field but Catechists need opportunities to share their insights and to learn from the insights of others. Each week there will be opportunities for sharing tips and techniques through online discussion.

- Welcome and Orientation: Available when you register
- Week 1: Course Planning and Overview of Course Plan -- November 30-December 6
- Week 2: Lesson Plan Parts 1-3: Preparation, Proclamation, Explanation - December 7-13
- Week 3 Lesson Plan Parts 4-5: Application, Celebration - December 14-20
- Final Assignment: Complete Your Lesson Plan -- Students will create a lesson plan using the template provided. (Course will remain available through the end of the month to complete this assignment)
Each week there will be handouts, a short pre-recorded video and a discussion board. Students may log in anytime during the week to complete view materials and engage in the online discussion. The discussion is a crucial part of the course where catechists learn from each other. Students are encouraged to log in periodically each week to read and respond to new posts from their classmates. Assignments are not given grades but are marked complete or incomplete. Each module must be completed before moving on to the next module.
There are no required textbooks. Short handouts will be provide with each module which are required reading.
Students are charged a $25.00 course fee.
